China's Official PMIs Signal Economic Expansion in September

China's official manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs both returned above the 50-point growth threshold in September.

China's official Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector registered 50.1 in September, an increase from August's 49.8. This figure aligns with expectations from a Reuters poll and marks the end of a two-month period of contraction for factory activity. Simultaneously, the official non-manufacturing PMI, which encompasses services and construction, also advanced to 50.2, indicating expansion in these sectors.

These readings, both moving above the critical 50-point mark that separates expansion from contraction, suggest a broad pickup in economic activity for the world's second-largest economy. For retail forex and CFD traders, China's economic health can significantly influence commodity prices, particularly industrial metals and energy, as well as currencies tied to commodity exports like the Australian Dollar (AUD) and New Zealand Dollar (NZD).

Key Sub-Indices Show Momentum

Within the manufacturing survey, the new orders sub-index reached 50.5, while the production sub-index climbed to 51.7. These components point to an increase in demand and output from Chinese factories. Furthermore, analysis from RatingDog indicates that manufacturers are experiencing higher input costs for metals and oil, suggesting sustained demand for these raw materials.

Despite these positive indicators, both official PMI figures remain close to the 50-point threshold, implying a modest expansion rather than robust growth. Domestic demand within China continues to exhibit softness, which may prompt Beijing to consider further policy interventions to bolster the economy. The discrepancy between the official manufacturing PMI of 50.1 and a private-sector counterpart's reading of 52.1 also invites discussion regarding the overall strength and breadth of the current recovery.

Overall, September's official PMI data offers a supportive economic snapshot for China ahead of upcoming holidays, although the market will likely remain attentive to policy developments and the trajectory of internal demand.
