EUR/USD Recovers Post-PPI, Eyes Key Technical Resistance

The EUR/USD pair rebounded after US PPI data, supported by ECB hawkish signals, now testing significant moving average resistance.

The EUR/USD currency pair experienced a notable recovery following an initial dip attributed to stronger-than-anticipated U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) figures. Despite the upward surprise in inflation data, which typically strengthens the U.S. dollar, sellers were unable to push the pair below a critical support zone. The lowest point reached was 1.1593, stopping just short of a significant swing level at 1.15849, indicating a reluctance among traders to extend the bearish momentum further.

This rebound was significantly bolstered by policy developments from the European Central Bank (ECB). The ECB's decision to implement a 25 basis point interest rate hike provided crucial support for the euro. Adding to this hawkish sentiment, subsequent reports suggested that the ECB might consider another rate increase as early as October. This potential for further tightening of monetary policy by the ECB helped the euro regain ground against the dollar, offsetting the initial negative impact of the U.S. PPI data.

It is noteworthy that the dollar's strength was not diminished by a general decline in U.S. bond yields. Both the 10-year and 2-year U.S. Treasury yields remained elevated, with the 10-year yield up 8.5 basis points at 4.922% and the 2-year up 11.2 basis points at 4.539%. Similarly, crude oil prices continued to climb, trading around $100.75 per barrel. Market expectations for a U.S. rate hike in the upcoming week have also increased to 70%, suggesting underlying dollar support from interest rate differentials, which is a key factor for retail forex and CFD traders to monitor.

Technical Resistance in Focus

  • The EUR/USD's recovery has brought it back to a critical technical juncture, where a cluster of moving averages presents substantial resistance.
  • The 100-hour moving average is currently positioned at 1.16252.
  • Immediately above this, the crucial 200-day moving average stands at 1.16321.
  • The current price action is actively testing this combined resistance area, indicating a significant battleground between buyers and sellers.

The convergence of these technical indicators with fundamental drivers from both the U.S. and Eurozone central banks suggests that the EUR/USD pair is at a pivotal point. Traders will be closely watching whether the pair can decisively break above this resistance or if it will face renewed selling pressure.
