German Business Activity Accelerates in September, PMIs Show

Germany's private sector saw stronger growth in September, with both manufacturing and services expanding more than anticipated.

Preliminary data for September indicates an unexpected acceleration in Germany's private sector activity, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence's Flash Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) results. The Composite PMI, which combines manufacturing and services, rose to 53.8, surpassing the 51.8 forecast and improving from August's 51.8. This suggests a more robust economic performance than many analysts had predicted.

The manufacturing sector's PMI registered 53.8, slightly below the 54.0 expectation but still indicating expansion. More significantly, the services sector's PMI surged to 52.9, considerably higher than the 50.0 consensus and a notable improvement from the previous 49.7. This shift brought the services sector back into growth territory, contributing significantly to the overall economic uplift. For retail forex and CFD traders, these economic indicators can influence the strength of the Euro, as positive data often supports the currency.

Phil Smith, Economics Associate Director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, highlighted the resilience observed in German businesses. He noted an increase in output growth, stable outlook expectations, and a second consecutive month of employment gains, even amidst renewed inflationary pressures. The data points to the most substantial rise in business activity in nearly a year, with the service sector's recovery being a key factor after a period of subdued performance.

Sectoral Insights and Employment Trends

  • Services Sector Rebound: The services industry's return to growth played a crucial role in the overall acceleration, indicating a broader recovery across the German economy.
  • Manufacturing Stability: While slightly missing expectations, the manufacturing PMI still signals expansion, with factories reporting increased work-in-hand and greater optimism.
  • Employment Growth: Job creation continued for a second month, primarily driven by the services sector. However, factory employment showed signs of stabilization, suggesting improving conditions across both major sectors.
  • Capacity Pressure: Rising inflows of new work are starting to strain business capacity, leading to an accumulation of backlogged orders, which in turn supports a stronger labor market.

The improved September PMI figures suggest a more optimistic short-term outlook for the German economy, with both key sectors contributing to expansion and employment growth, despite ongoing inflationary challenges.
