PBOC Sets Yuan Reference Rate, Maintains Liquidity Operations

China's central bank established the daily yuan reference rate against the US dollar and conducted liquidity injections to support the financial system.

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) today announced its official reference rate for the USD/CNY currency pair at 6.7895. This figure was notably higher than market expectations, which had estimated a rate around 6.7462. The PBOC's daily fixing is a crucial mechanism, as it permits the onshore yuan (CNY) to trade within a 2% band, either above or below this central parity rate. This system provides a degree of managed flexibility for the yuan's exchange rate.

For retail forex and CFD traders, understanding the PBOC's reference rate is essential when trading yuan-related pairs, as it sets the midpoint for the day's permissible trading range for the onshore yuan. Significant deviations from market forecasts can introduce volatility and influence trading strategies for those involved in CNY or CNH (offshore yuan) instruments.

PBOC Liquidity Management

In addition to setting the currency reference rate, the PBOC also conducted open market operations to manage liquidity within the financial system. The central bank injected 1 billion yuan through seven-day reverse repurchase agreements. The interest rate for these operations remained constant at 1.4%. Such actions are part of the PBOC's broader strategy to ensure adequate liquidity and stable funding conditions in the interbank market.

Reverse repos are a standard tool used by central banks globally to either inject or withdraw short-term liquidity, thereby influencing money market rates and supporting financial stability. The consistency in the reverse repo rate indicates that the PBOC is maintaining its current monetary policy stance regarding short-term funding costs, even as it adjusts the currency's daily reference point.

The PBOC's dual actions — setting the yuan's daily midpoint and managing systemic liquidity — underscore its ongoing efforts to balance currency stability with broader economic support through controlled monetary operations.
