UK Construction Sector Decline Moderates in July

The UK construction industry experienced a less severe downturn in July, with all major sub-sectors showing signs of improved resilience.

The United Kingdom's construction sector demonstrated a notable moderation in its downturn during July, with the latest Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data indicating an easing of business activity declines across all primary categories. The July construction PMI registered 44.7, surpassing both the anticipated figure of 40.0 and the previous month's 38.4. While the overall conditions within the sector remain subdued, this improvement suggests a more positive start to the third quarter.

A key development was the slowest recorded fall in new orders since September 2025, signaling a potential rebound in client demand. This reduction in the pace of decline in new business received by construction firms reached its weakest point in ten months during July. Such indicators are closely watched by forex traders as they can influence the strength of the British Pound, while CFD traders might look at related construction company stocks for potential opportunities.

Sectoral Performance Highlights

  • Commercial Work: This segment displayed the most significant resilience, with an activity index of 46.8, indicating a less pronounced contraction compared to other areas.
  • House Building: Residential construction activity saw its slowest rate of decline since October 2025, registering 41.8.
  • Civil Engineering: Despite the overall improvement, civil engineering continued to experience the steepest pace of decline at 38.3.

Adding to the more optimistic outlook is a further easing of inflationary pressures within the sector. Input price inflation continued to moderate from the near four-year high observed in May. Although cost burdens for businesses remain elevated, the most recent increase in average costs was the slowest recorded since February, suggesting a gradual stabilization of material and operational expenses.

In summary, while the UK construction sector is still navigating challenging conditions, the July data points to a significant easing of the downturn and some encouraging signs of renewed demand and moderating inflation. This provides a glimmer of optimism for the industry as it progresses through the second half of the year.
