UK Mortgage Approvals Rise in June, Consumer Credit Growth Persists

UK mortgage approvals increased in June, exceeding forecasts, while consumer credit borrowing also saw a slight uptick.

New data from the Bank of England indicates a notable increase in UK mortgage approvals during June, surpassing market expectations. Approvals for house purchases reached 58,200, up from a revised 56,600 in May, and above the anticipated 57,200. This marks a rebound, although the figure remains below the six-month average of approximately 61,400 approvals.

Alongside the rise in approvals, the net amount of mortgage debt borrowed by individuals in the UK also saw a significant jump, reaching £7.7 billion in June, a substantial increase from £3.3 billion in May. A closer look at the data reveals that approvals for remortgaging contributed to this increase, climbing to 34,200 in June from 33,800 in the previous month.

These figures provide a snapshot of the UK's housing market activity and consumer financial behavior, which can indirectly influence the strength of the British Pound (GBP) against other major currencies. Retail forex and CFD traders often monitor such economic indicators for insights into potential currency movements, as they reflect underlying economic health and consumer confidence.

Consumer Credit Borrowing Trends

In parallel with mortgage data, net consumer credit borrowing also showed an increase, rising slightly to £1.8 billion in June from £1.7 billion in May. This figure aligns closely with the six-month average for consumer credit. The breakdown indicates that borrowing through credit cards accounted for £0.9 billion, with other forms of consumer credit making up the remaining £0.9 billion.

While the overall annual growth rate for all consumer credit edged up to 9.1% in June from 9.0% in May, a particular aspect of concern highlighted in the report is the continued acceleration in credit card borrowing. The annual growth rate for credit card debt further increased to 12.5%, remaining well into double-digits amidst ongoing economic uncertainties.

Overall, the June data presents a mixed picture of the UK's financial landscape, with a recovery in mortgage market activity contrasting with persistent, and in some areas accelerating, consumer credit growth.
